Surcharge is a rather out-dated term. Decades
ago, surcharges were added to the cost of a purchase for those
who used credit cards instead of cash. Today, surcharges are
largely prohibited though you’ll sometimes face an additional
fee for using an ATM, debit or credit card. For example, most
ATM machines charge a fee for cash withdrawals unless you
have an account with that particular company. Fees range from
a percentage of the withdrawal amount to a set “per
transaction” fee. As a rule, you won’t be paying
a surcharge for using your credit card to pay for purchases,
but it’s a good idea to watch your credit card Statement
and your bank statement for any additional fees added to debit
card and credit card transactions.
